Religious order

The main monastic orders in the Western Church were:

• the Benedictine
• the Cistercians
• the Dominicans
• the Franciscans (both mendicant orders)
• the Carmelites.

There were also religious orders associated with the crusades. These chivalric orders had a variety of roles:

• Knights Templar
• Knights of St. John of Jerusalem
