The minnesingers were the German equivalent of the troubadours. They flourished from c.1150 - c.1350. The main source for their songs, or minnelied, are from 15th Century manuscripts. A number of their verses are included in the Codex Manesse, along with pictorial representations of the poets.

The term comes from a typical German combination of the nouns for 'singer' and 'romantic love'. It is also written as minnesänger.
