The following is a guide for anyone who is transliterating Middle and Old English texts.
Þ, æ, ð and þ appear often in many texts but OCR software doesn't pick them up most of the time. These can be entered as normal ASCII characters.
Abbreviations should be changed into their full forms because many of the characters used for abbreviation do not exist in any modern typeface.
The following conventions were used in creating the Project Gutenberg version of the Forme of Cury
- Dont change þ into 'th'
- The macron, -, over vowels and 'n' should be replaced with n, m, er or u.
-
should be replaced with per or par
- The hook,
, over the end of a word should be replaced with er or es
-
over the end of a word should be changed to ur or er
- super script letters directly above others in a word should be moved into the body of the word and expanded.
-
should be replaced with a modern '&'
