A Pelican is a waterbird that is common in Europe. They are often displayed in heraldry as "a pelican in its piety", which shows a pelican tearing at its breast with its beak in order to feed its blood to its starving chicks.

In the SCA, a pelican is someone who is a member of the Order of the Pelican. The symbol of the order is a pelican in her piety.
