According to Thoinot Arbeau in Orchesography, a double left as performed in a branle consists of a pied gauche largi, a pied droit approché, another pied gauche largi, and a pied droit joint. In other words a step to the left, a right step bringing the feet almost together, a step to the left and then a right step bringing the feet together.
