In a medieval context, Celtic refers to the cultures of Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Western Brittany. Original references to the Celts, from Roman sources, place them north of Italy and spreading through Gaul (modern day France). Despite linguistic evidence linking these cultures there has been some recent controversy regarding the archaeological validity of accepting such a link.
