Canvas, in period and in modern times, is a generic term for any sturdy and durable cloth made from linen, cotton, wool or any other material. Simply saying something is made out of canvas does not indicate what material the canvas is made from.
In the art of painting, period canvas was always linen. In modern times, cotton duck is most commonly used with linen canvas carrying the linen designation.
